This map is basically a square grid pattern. As you can see the top and bottom band are connected to each other (thus is only one band) that wraps east-west forming a ring. There is a rectangular band of worlds that loop from the top of the east-west band to the bottom thus forming another ring. Thus we have two rings connected by a common area.

I have colored the map to show the areas controlled by the two alliances.
